Background of the Study
As cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated, universities must ensure that both their staff and students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to safeguard sensitive information. Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State, faces growing concerns over network security, especially as students and staff access university resources via online platforms. Data breaches, phishing attacks, and unauthorized access to sensitive academic and administrative systems remain significant challenges in educational environments (Okeke et al., 2023).
A network security awareness program aims to educate users about potential security risks and teach them how to prevent common threats, such as weak passwords, phishing emails, and malware. Such a program would include targeted training, workshops, seminars, and the development of informational materials for the university community. The success of these programs can reduce human error and vulnerability in the network by fostering a culture of proactive security practices.
Federal University, Lokoja, requires a customized network security awareness program to address its specific security risks. This research will develop an awareness program that focuses on educating university members about the importance of cybersecurity and best practices for protecting their accounts and data from malicious actors.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing reliance on online systems at Federal University, Lokoja, there is a lack of a comprehensive network security awareness program. Many students and staff are unaware of the risks associated with their online activities, making the university vulnerable to cyber threats such as data breaches, phishing attacks, and malware infections.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To develop a network security awareness program tailored to the needs of Federal University, Lokoja.

  2. To assess the effectiveness of the security awareness program in improving cybersecurity practices among students and staff.

  3. To recommend strategies for further improving network security awareness at the university.

Research Questions

  1. What are the current network security awareness levels among students and staff at Federal University, Lokoja?

  2. How effective would a network security awareness program be in improving the security practices of university members?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance the security awareness program at Federal University, Lokoja?

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on developing a network security awareness program for Federal University, Lokoja, targeting staff and students. The limitations include challenges in measuring the direct impact of the awareness program on reducing security incidents and the difficulty of assessing long-term changes in user behavior.
